Emilia Shawl Knitting Pattern

This beautiful shawl/poncho knit in linen is the perfect ally for a simple dress or summer shirt look.

It is knit in Rowan Pure Linen and whatever color you choose, it will turn out stunning. It’s a quite easy garment to knit, it’s secret resides in a good blocking, be warned that while it’s being knit, as with any garment knit in linen, it will look dubious, but fear not! Once blocked it will look just as good as in the pictures 🙂

It is perfect for spring/summer; linen is light and has a wonderful give, the final result is light and elegant.

Materials

3 skeins of Pure Linen Rowan, 50 grams (1.76 ounces), 142 yards (130 meters).

6mm/US10 needles (If using circulars, 80cm/32in cables will work).

Gauge 15 stitches and 15 rows = 4 inches in stockinette st

Construction Notes

A rectangle, measuring 45cm/18in wide (cast on edge) by 140cm/55in long (rows knit), with a lace border worked at the end of the knit rows (RS) and the beginning of the purl rows (WS).

Once the rectangle is knit, it is folded in half along the long side and it is seamed leaving a gap for the head.

Cast on 70 with 6mm/US10 needles and knit two rows.

Next row: k54, pm (to mark lace st), work lace: first chart row (see below).

Next row: work chart row 2, sm, p to the end of row.

From now on work 54 st of the shawl body in stockinette stitch, knit the RS rows and purl the WS rows, and at the same time work the 14 chart rows.

Lace Pattern:

Row 1: k6, YO, k5, YO, k2tog,YO, k3 (18st)

Row 2 and all even rows: k3, p to the last 3 st, k3

Row 3: k7, SSSK, k2, (YO, K2tog) twice, k2. (16st)

Row 5: k6, k2tog, k2, (YO, k2tog) twice, k2. (15st)

Row 7: k5, k2tog, k2, (YO, k2tog) twice, k2. (14st)

Row 9: k4, k2tog, k2, (YO, k2tog) twice, k2. (13st)

Row 11: k3, k2tog, k2, YO, k1, YO, k2tog, YO, k3. (14st)

Row 13: k6, YO, k3, YO, k2tog, YO, k3 (16st)

Row 14 (same as all even rows): k3, p to the last 3 st, k3

Once these 14 rows are completed, start again on Row 1. Repeat the 14 rows sequence until piece measures aprox 140cm/55in.

*SSSK: slip 2 st from left to right needle as if to knit, knit both stitches together through the back loop (as shown in picture). One st remaining on the right needle, slip it to left needle and pass next stitch (the one on the left) over it. Slip this stitch to the right needle again. 2 st decreased.

If you prefer to work from a chart, here it is:

Chart is read from right to left on odd rows (RS rows) and from left to right on even rows (WS rows).

Once the work gets to aprox 140cm/55in, knit 2 rows and bind off all stitches.

Finishing:

Fold the rectangle in half, leaving the lace at the lower edge and sew the other edge leaving a gap of aprox 70cm/27.5in wide. Mattress stitch is recommended: tutorial.
